Innovative projects awarded new breast cancer research partnership funding

31 March 2014

Liggins Institute senior research fellows Dr Dongxu Liu and Dr Jo Perry will lead two of three research projects selected for funding through the Breast Cancer Research in New Zealand initiative.

The initiative is a partnership between the Breast Cancer Research Trust, the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation and the Health Research Council of NZ. Announcing the funding award today a HRC media release observed that all the projects shared the goal of improving and ultimately ensuring breast cancer survival in New Zealand.

The investigators will each receive around $200,000 over the next two years for their projects.

Dr Liu will investigate the potential use of a novel protein (SHON), which his team has identified, for predicting how patients will respond to anti-oestrogen drugs.

Dr Perry’s team will use a specialised high-throughput assay to identify small molecules that will inhibit the action of growth hormone (GH) in promoting the growth of breast cancer by binding to the GH receptor.
