This week the Liggins Institute and Gravida: National Centre for Growth and Development (a Centre of Research Excellence hosted by the University  of Auckland) thanked some of the 350 members of the University community who have participated in the 30 minute “Meet-a Scientist” section of the LENScience day-programmes during 2013.

“The LENScience Partnership Programmes allow our community to engage in active communication of science with adolescents,” says LENScience Director Jacquie Bay. “The success of the programmes relies on the school communities as well as participants from the science community.”

This year the programme reached 8,000 11-18 year old school students and is supported by research demonstrating that this experience contributes to changing attitudes about who scientists are and their value to society. Scientists find the experience rewarding with many taking part multiple times thoughout the year.

Dr Chris Guise (pictured centre) a research fellow at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre was recognised for his outstanding contribution to this programme during 2013.
