Liggins Institute
Supervision, support and facilities
Liggins Institute scientists are able to supervise students undertaking higher degrees. This is done through the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at The University of Auckland.
Each student has one primary supervisor who is a member of our world-class research team and a specialist in the student’s field of interest. PhD students are supported by additional supervisors and advisers, often from different or complementary disciplines. This ensures that students have access to a wider range of ideas, expertise, resources and opportunities.
Prospective students should visit the "Our people" section of this website to learn more about our principal investigators and other research staff.
Each student is assigned at least two supervisors who are responsible for the student’s research training and support. Supervisors are trained by the University to ensure that you receive top level supervision. The institute runs a postgraduate student mentorship programme which gives students access to additional academic staff members who provide guidance through the degree.
Students also receive advice on career opportunities and support for preparation and travel for national and international conferences.
International students are supported both within the Liggins Institute (we have a person dedicated to support international students) and also within the University through international student support.
Visit The University of Auckland pages for international students to learn more.
All postgraduate students at the Liggins are allocated their own desk space and computer.
The Liggins Institute offers state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and equipment, including cell culture facilities, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, DEXA scanning, Real-time PCR analysis, and SNP, methylation and expression analysis using a Sequenom Epityper as well as a research farm and a clinical research unit.
