Scholarships and awards
The Liggins Institute offers a limited number of scholarships for masters and doctoral degrees. Students are also advised to investigate the wide range of scholarships and awards available to postgraduate students of The University of Auckland and discuss opportunities with their prospective supervisors.
The Liggins Institute currently has University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarships available for students enroling for approved PhD degrees. The scholarships are intended to support academically excellent domestic students undertaking doctoral studies. They include a stipend of up to $25,000 per annum and compulsory fees for 3 years.
To be eligible students must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and have a grade point average of 7.0 or better.

As a postgraduate student you could be eligible for one of nearly 400 scholarships and awards.
Scholarships and awards for postgraduate students range from one-off payments to scholarships that pay your tuition fees and living costs for up to four years. For example, as a high-achieving student you could apply for a University of Auckland Masters/Honours/PGDip Scholarship, which offers $10,000 per annum plus the cost of your compulsory fees.
The Scholarships Office maintains a comprehensive database of University of Auckland scholarships as well as information on external scholarships.
The University also offers a range of postgraduate scholarships for international students.
If you enrol as a postgraduate student at The University of Auckland, then regardless of your background or where you live, you may be eligible for a scholarship. Criteria include:
- academic excellence
- financial hardship
- gender
- Māori and Pacific students
- students with disabilities.
