Silmara moved from Brazil to New Zealand in 2004 to pursue her interests in exercise physiology and cardiac rehabilitation.
During her MSc in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at The University of Auckland, she became involved with the Liggins Institute looking at cardiac function in diabetic youth.
Silmara then coordinated the Auckland University Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic for two years before officially joining the Liggins Institute in 2007.
Her PhD research focused on the effects of exercise training intervention on the cardiovascular function of diabetic adolescents. Silmara is now a postdoctoral fellow, and her current research is examining the effects of whole body vibration training on the muscles and bones of disabled children and adolescents.
