Profile

Jacquie is founding Director of LENScience, an innovative science education programme that creates opportunities for schools and scientists to work together in activities that promote the development of scientific literacy and capability. She leads research at the Liggins Institute which is looking at public perceptions of the relationship between nutrition and disease risk.

She leads research at the Liggins Institute which is looking at the role of collaborations between science and science education in translating concepts of the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) into understandings and behaviours that will enable reduction in noncommunicable disease risk in current and future generations.

A graduate of the University of Auckland, Jacquie was formerly Head of Science at Diocesan School for Girls. In 1999 she conducted research that showed the value of student-led research in promoting understanding of science. This has led to the development of the LENScience Mentor programme. This programme provides opportunities for students to engage in research, supported by scaffolded teaching, alongside access to resources and mentors from the university community.

Jacquie is known for her innovative use of ICT tools in science classrooms. In 2008, working with Kordia and the University of Auckland ITS division, she co-developed the award winning LENScience Connect learning platform, utilising a combination of satellite or web broadcast with Web 2.0 to bring students and scientists from throughout New Zealand together for interactive learning programmes.
