Liggins Institute
International Healthy Start to Life Project
An international project led by members of the Liggins Institute means that important research discoveries may soon have a direct influence on health policy in New Zealand and potentially internationally.
A multi-disciplinary project, led from the Liggins Institute, is modelling the costs involved in a poor start to life. They are developing a generic model to detail the costs (biological, social and economic) associated with sub-optimal intrauterine growth and a disadvantaged environment before birth and in infancy. The aim of this project, which will be applicable to New Zealand and international contexts, is to highlight the benefits and importance of intervening early across a population to optimise all spheres of development throughout life. By translating high quality research outputs into dollars and cents, a real opportunity exists to bring research to life in real policy with real benefit.
